Where in the World is all the oil and who is consuming it?
All of this information is from the Energy Information Administration, this is the official energy statistics from the U.S. government.
Fact #1 – If the U.S. stopped importing oil our reserves would be gone in 1076 days or 2.9 years. We have 21billion in reserves and consume 19.5 million a day
Fact#2 – If the U.S. only imported from Canada both of our oil reserves would be gone in 9183 days or 25 years . This is assuming of course that we do not increaase our usage. A more realistic number is probably 20 years or so. We have 21 billion they have 179billion making 200 billion in reserves. We consume 19.5million a day they consume 2.3million a day means together we consume 21.8million/day.
Fact#3 – We need the middle east oil to survive. If we did not have it our economy would fail.
Fact#4 – We need to come up with green solutions before it is too late! Oil is a non renewable resource. It is only a matter of time before it is gone. Yet without it our economy could not survive.
Fact#5 - Based on these facts how could anyone argue the war in the middle east is not over oil? If you have oil reserves one of two things happens. You are either the U.S. best friend or worst enemy. This can be determined by how much oil you will export to fuel our econonmy. Take Saudia Arabia for instance. 15 of the 19 high jackers from September 11th came from this country yet they are our best friends? This is a bipartisan thing by the way. This is alone based on the fact that they produce 11 million barrels of oil per day. Take a second to sit down and picture that, no seriously. 11 million barrels of oil in one day!
Proven Oil Reserves

Let’s first start with the above information in regards to which nations hold the proven reserves. (In billions)
- Saudia Arabia 262
- Canada 179
- Iran 136
- Iraq 115
- Kuwait 101
- UAE 97
- Venezuela 80
- Russia 60
- Libya 41
- Nigeria 36
- Kazakhastan 30
- United States 21
- China 16
- Qatar 15
- Mexico 12
- Algeria 12
- Brazil 12
If you add all these up you get 1225 billion barrels of oil. So now lets arrange this information by percentage of world’s oil supply.
- Saudia Arabia 21%
- Canada 14%
- Iran 11%
- Iraq 9%
- Kuwait 8%
- UAE 2%
- Venezuela 1%
- Russia 5%
- Libya 3%
- Nigeria 3%
- Kazakhastan 2%
- United States 2%
- China 1%
- Qatar 1%
- Mexico <1%
- Algeria <1%
- Brazil <1%
Now let’s see how much oil is in the largest middle east countries.
- Saudia Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, UAE 51%
- Canada 14%
- UAE 2%
- Venezuela 1%
- Russia 1%
- Libya 3%
- Nigeria 3%
- Kazakhastan 2%
- United States 2%
- China 1%
- Qatar 1%
- Mexico <1%
- Algeria <1%
- Brazil <1%
You can see here over 50% of the oil exists in this small region of the world. Followed by Canada at 14%. However, one must truely consider the size of Canada and how spread this oil is. Especially in comparison to the tightness of the oil supply in the middle east.
Oil Consumption
So the next question we should ask ourselves is which nations consume the most oil.(millions of barrels a day)
- United States 20

- Canada 2.3
- South Korea 2.2
- Mexico 2.1
- France 2
- Iran 1.8
- UK 1.7
- Italy 1.6
- Spain 1.6
- Indonesia 1.2
Oil Production
Now let’s see how much oil each country pulls out of the ground.(in millions of barrels)
- Saudia Arabia 11
- Russia 9.8
- United States 8.5
- Iran 4.2
- China 4
- Canada 3.4
- Mexico 3.2
- UAE 3.0
- Kuwait 2.7
- Venezuela 2.6
- Norway 2.5
- Brazil 2.4
- Iraq 2.4
- Algeria 2.2
- Nigeria 2.2
- Angola 2.0
- Libya 1.9
- UK 1.6
- Kazakhstan 1.4
- Qatar 1.2
- Indonesia 1.1
